CASTL Moves to Establish Biomanufacturing Training Facility in Québec

Charlottetown, PE – The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) will proceed with establishing a biopharmaceutical manufacturing training facility in Québec. Thanks to a contribution of $2.5 million from the Québec Government, CASTL will purchase and install pilot-scale bioprocessing equipment for a CASTL training facility and fund part of the initial operating expenses for two years.

A national initiative of the Prince Edward Island BioAlliance, CASTL is a unique national skills and training program delivered in response to the needs of Canada’s biopharma manufacturing industry. CASTL is the exclusive Canadian provider of the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research, and Training (NIBRT) licensed training programs. Based in Ireland, NIBRT develops and delivers state-of-the-art training and education programs for the world’s leading biopharmaceutical manufacturing companies. In partnership with adMare BioInnovations, CASTL will deliver this theoretical and practical hands-on training curriculum at their previously announced training facility in Prince Edward Island and now in Québec.

“CASTL is thrilled to be bringing a world-class biomanufacturing training program to Québec. The establishment of the Québec facility will offer practical learning experiences for a broad range of trainees, including industry employees, post-secondary students and those transitioning to this fast-growing sector. Through partnerships with government, industry, and academia, CASTL will respond to the economic demands for highly skilled talent,” said Penny Walsh-McGuire, Executive Director, CASTL.

“The health crisis has highlighted the need to be able to adequately meet Quebec’s needs for biopharmaceutical products, such as vaccines. As a government, we make it our duty to support biomanufacturing and to develop the necessary expertise to increase Quebec’s production of these products,” said Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of Economy and Innovation and Minister responsible for Regional Economic Development.

“For our government, attracting global players in the field of life sciences to Quebec is of great importance. If we want to establish ourselves as a leader in health and innovation, we know that it is imperative to establish a biomanufacturing training center now in order to provide a qualified workforce right here. I would like to thank all the partners involved in this dynamic and essential life sciences pathway,” said Christian Dubé, Minister of Health and Social Services.
