CASTL launches hands-on training workshops in Aseptic & Cell Culture Techniques and Bioreactor Operations

Montreal, QC - The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) is excited to launch a series of one-day workshops designed to provide students with intensive, hands-on training in specific areas of biopharmaceutical manufacturing. The workshops are intended to enhance practical skills and industry readiness by focusing on experiential learning.

Our goal is to offer the highest standard of industry training in Canada. These workshops will immerse students in one of our GMP-like training facilities, where they will receive hands-on instruction from industry experts.

Sven Ansorge
Director of Technical Training

The development of these workshops is in response to industry demand for more practical, hands-on training in GMP-like environments. Upon completion of a workshop, trainees will have obtained detailed understanding on each topic that will be directly applicable in the workplace.

CASTL's first two workshops will cover upstream processing topics including “Aseptic & Cell Culture Techniques" and "Bioreactor Operations," with the initial sessions scheduled for June 18 and 19, 2024 at CASTL’s Montreal Biomanufacturing Training Facility.

Upon successful completion of Aseptic & Cell Culture Techniques attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of aseptic techniques
  • Describe the practice of culturing mammalian cells in an aseptic environment in small scale
  • Count cells using both an automated and manual method
  • Interpret the nutrient and metabolite levels of cell culture medium

And upon completion of Bioreactor Operations attendees will be able to:

  • List the equipment required for scale up mammalian cultures
  • Describe the cell expansion and inoculation methods in single-use systems
  • Identify the main components of state-of-the-art bioreactor systems
  • Aseptically prepare and run a 200L single-use bioreactor
