CASTL launches new BioWorks training program to upskill Canada’s biomanufacturing workforce

Charlottetown, PE – December 19, 2024. The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) is pleased to announce the launch of the CASTL BioWorks Training Program, an initiative funded by Upskill Canada, powered by Palette Skills, and the Government of Canada. Aligned with CASTL’s mission to equip Canada’s biomanufacturing workforce for sustained sector growth, this program will subsidize 50% of training costs for upskilling and cross-training industry employees.

The CASTL BioWorks Training Program, focusing on both technical and professional skills, will equip employers with a highly qualified workforce, ready to meet the demands of the biomanufacturing industry. The program’s content will be tailored to address the unique needs of each organization, from small and medium life sciences companies to larger organizations, ensuring maximum relevance and impact.

“We’re thrilled to launch the CASTL BioWorks Training Program, which brings critical support to biomanufacturing employers at a pivotal time for the industry,” said Penny Walsh-McGuire, CEO of CASTL. “This initiative not only helps companies offset the cost of training but empowers them to invest in their teams’ technical and professional growth. By equipping employees with the skills, they need to excel, we’re building a more resilient and adaptable workforce that will continue to drive innovation and meet the evolving demands of the sector.”

“We are thrilled to continue our work with CASTL with this new program, allowing more workers to access vital training,” said Rhonda Barnet, CEO of Palette Skills. “Graduates of the BioWorks Training Program will be ready to fill jobs in Canada’s growing biomanufacturing sector, equipped with the most up-to-date skills, improving their productivity and allowing for business growth.”

The part-time and full-time technical skills training program, designed to minimize disruption to operations, will include hands-on experience in upstream processing, downstream processing, fill-finish operations, quality assurance/validation, quality control, as well as emerging technologies such as vaccine development and specialized medicines. Professional skills training options will include communication, team building, leadership, and essential management skills.

Through this initiative, CASTL is fostering a stronger, more resilient workforce that will continue to drive innovation, enhance productivity, and contribute to Canada’s leadership in biomanufacturing on the global stage.
